How We Build

Through design and engineering we translate ideas into working prototypes that can be demonstrated to customers and investors. We provide engineering support, business development, funding support, and regulatory management to build a company. The MDC model is intensely interactive: we remain actively involved from ideation to product release.

Collectively, MDC companies have secured more than $15M in contracts, grants, and investments, including multiple SBIR awards from the National Science Foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a startup studio?
Dianna Lesage describes it best: Startup studios transform unique ideas into independent companies. Unlike accelerators or incubators, studios rely on their internal teams to create or source ideas, build MVPs, validate them, then spin out the new venture once a founding team is in place.
Why is MDC a startup studio?
MDC invites inventors to share ideas at the earliest stage and partners with them to clarify the clinical value, market potential, development challenges, funding plan, and regulatory pathway. When an idea clears our screening process, we form a company with the inventor, pursue early funding (often grants), and take an active role in helping the new venture launch and grow.
What does MDC do for its client companies?
Support shifts with each company's stage. We help assess feasibility, routes to market, funding strategies, and regulatory needs. When we commit to an invention, we negotiate to form a company, help secure grants and investments, loan key talent, provide space, support pivots, and guide founders through programs such as I-Corps. In total, MDC client companies have raised more than $15M in contracts, grants, and investments.
How many companies has MDC worked with?
MDC is supporting 13 companies, most resident in the studio. Our first graduate,NextStep Robotics, moved to the University of Maryland BioPark in 2021. We continually screen new technologies and collaborate with inventors across Maryland's innovation ecosystem.
Is MDC accepting new companies?
Yes. We welcome conversations with inventors and founders. Visit the For Entrepreneurs page to learn how to connect.
How can I invest in MDC companies?
Investors can participate through the MDC-Verte Impact Fund, which backs MDC ventures and other medtech companies in Opportunity Zones, or by investing directly in our portfolio companies. Reach out to discuss active raises across seed and Series A rounds.
